Sunny Ramble

Image
https://ift.tt/eCVrKfs I had a nice ride yesterday on my upright bike near the base of Anderson Dam and on the Coyote Creek trail. The trails hide dried enough that I could also do some off-roading. It was a pretty warm day for this time of the year. I have to enjoy this while it lasts, the rain will becoming back in earnest on Wednesday. A Break From the Rain

Image
https://ift.tt/DCMhXYp We’ve had rain off and on for over a week, but yesterday was the first day of sunshine and we now have several clear days ahead. I enjoyed a pleasant 90 minute sunny cruise Southeast of Morgan Hill towards San Martin. The sunshine was really appreciated since it has been scarce lately. Tuesday Group Ride To Gilroy

Image
https://ift.tt/2Cexbwn We got a break in the rain on Tuesday so my group headed down to Gilroy, first going up into the foothills West of Morgan Hill, and then picking up the Gilroy recreational path at Hecker Pass Highway and Burchell road. We continued on to the Gilroy sports complex, then went home on Santa Teresa Boulevard, for a three hour outing from me. Unfortunately we had a mishap on the way. One of the riders got a flat so slowed down suddenly, and my friend Bruce touched wheels with him and went down. He still seemed OK to ride but headed home just in case. We found out later he had broken his collarbone. Hopefully it will heal up well naturally. The lesson here is to leave more space from other riders on group rides. Reversing Endothelial Damage

Image
https://ift.tt/EsFhZl5 Age-Related Damage to Endothelium The endothelium is the innermost layer of blood vessels, which can become damaged as we get older, an important aspect of cardiovascular disease. I discovered the vital role of the endothelium when I discovered that I have high blood pressure if it is not controlled by metoprolol (a medicine I am on to prevent heart arrhythmias, which were a side effect of my needing a heart valve replacement ). The blood pressure incident and what I subsequently learned from it is discussed here . My most important takeaway was to make sure I have lots of nitrates in my diet, from foods like beets and arugula. That has been working well for keeping blood pressure normal. But that is helping to keep my blood vessels dilating normally, despite age-related damage to the endothelium. As I mentioned at the end of that previous post, I’d like to learn about how to reduce damage to the endothelium. It turns out this is possible, and this is dis...

Riding Between The Raindrops

Image
https://ift.tt/1STIrhE We’ve been getting rain off and on since Friday, expected to continue this way through at least Wednesday of next week. I have my trainer set up in the garage if necessary, but yesterday it appears there might be a morning interlude between storms, so I put on rain gear and took my upright bike out for a 90 minute ride. I got sprinkled on a few times but it was otherwise ok, although the sky looked ominous like more storms are on the way. This made for a nice ride on what was meant to be an easy day. First Tuesday Group Ride This Year

Image
https://ift.tt/6znFATO I’ve missed all my Tuesday group rides because of a lingering cold so it was nice to be back yesterday. We rode around both South County reservoirs (Uavs and Chesbro) plus did an out and back to Rancho Canada Open Space at the end of Casa Loma Road, for a little over 30 miles. It wasn’t quite as cold as it’s been lately so it was a nice ride. I took my e-bike for a change because I’ve been riding the recumbent a lot. Off Uvas Road Near Casa Loma Road, Looking South

Recumbent Group Ride

Image
https://ift.tt/cQmGoL4 I had a fun group ride today with Bay Area Recumbent Cyclists. They started from the Coyote Creek trail further north near Bernal Road, so I rode up to meet them and we took the trail back to the end in Morgan Hill. Then we had lunch nearby. I said goodbye there and headed home so this was a total of just over two hours for me. It rained all night but was supposed to be sunny at the start of the ride. It turned out to be still gloomy but at least no longer raining. The trail was pretty soggy from last night’s rain but I was dressed for it. There was an interesting assortment of trikes and bikes. My favorite was a solar-powered electric assist bike. It was a kit homemade by the owner. He didn’t bring his panels with him today, just ran on battery. He said he can charge it from empty to full in about 3 hours on a sunny day. Meeting Up At Parking Lot At Basking Ridge Taking A Break At Anderson Visitor’s Center

71st Birthday Present Arrived

Image
https://ift.tt/DueVJrK I got a new recumbent bike for my 71st birthday which just arrived a couple of days ago. My recumbent was over 10 years old because I bought it used, and some of the components like gears and brakes were getting a little obsolete and hard to tune. I could have just replaced it with the latest version of the same model (the Bacchetta Giro A20 ). But the Giro is a touring model, and I realized that for the same price I could get a lighter weight performance model, the Bacchetta Corsa . This was appealing because I like to go after Strava age group records . I was concerned that the more aggressive position on the Corsa might not be as comfortable as the Giro, and comfort to me is more important overall than performance. However, I realized that if the bike has disk brakes, it is easy to make wheel changes, and the Corsa could be made as comfortable as the Giro for day to day riding. Then with a wheel and seat swap I could put it back in performance mode whenever I ...

Getting Over A Cold…

Image
https://ift.tt/abyLjJI I had to take some time off from riding because about 3 days ago I caught a cold. Mostly head symptoms like coughing, runny nose, sinus congestion. So I gave my immune system some rest and finally started to kick it. Today was an easy ride, tomorrow I hope to be back to my regular routine. Not the most fun way to start the year but I’m glad to have it over with. https://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2019/09/16/scientists-close-in-on-a-cure-for-the-common-cold/

First Harder Workout of the Year

Image
https://ift.tt/7PtCKNE Yesterday I started out with my upper body workout, then went for a brisk ride on my e-bike. It was predicted rain would come in the afternoon so I made sure I got it done in the dry. I had a nice ride to the southwest of Morgan Hill. All the recent rain has made the wild grass green so I saw some nice scenery. The storm showed up in the late afternoon as anticipated. It will rain on and off until Saturday. We are getting a nice start for out water supply. Green Grass Under the trees at Ward’s Oak Glen Farm in Paradise Valley . The storm clouds are gathering to the west.
