Several Rides, Some Warm, Some Nice

Image
https://ift.tt/UQ87HkV Earlier last week we had high temperatures up in to the 90s F (32+ C) so it was good to get my rides in early. I’ve got pics from 3 rides here. The first was a week ago, a ride out to Harvey Bear Park on my upright. I meant to go off road but ran out of time so I just did the scenic paved Martin Murphy trail loop. Up Main Ave past Guillelmo winery East on Tennant towards Foothill ave Up San Martin Ave towards the entrance to Harvey Bear The second ride was Tuesday of last week, my group ride, Southeast of Morgan Hill and up in the hills east of Gilroy. This was the hottest day, probably reaching the high 80s F (30+ C) by the end of the ride. This was our hottest ride this year so far and everybody was not acclimatized so we felt more tired than usual afterwards. Meeting at the start in Nob Hill’s parking lot. Locals ride here (it’s only 3 miles for me), while those from further away drive and park. East on Dryden Ave in Gilroy Up and over the hi...

A Skeptic Learns There is Something Beyond Matter

Image
https://ift.tt/AMOx6Cl I discussed in a previous post the arguments over whether science plus the philosophy of scientific materialism are enough to explain the universe and our presence as conscious beings in it. Alternatively, is “something more” that specifically addresses consciousness needed? A significant percentage of scientists do believe “something more” is needed, and there is even an association of “post-materialist” scientists . But a large number of scientists, perhaps the majority, still believe materialism is enough, and if there is anything not explained now, it will be in the future (this is known as “promissory materialism”). David Gibbs, Md, was one such scientist, and his enjoyable memoir The Death of Materialism describes his journey from skepticism to belief. http://www.Amazon.com/books Dr. Gibbs has many years of experience in emergency medicine. He describes himself as a believer in hard science and materialism. Even in his pre-med studies he encountere...

Group Ride To Gilroy

Image
https://ift.tt/WcUQ8n0 My group headed Southwest of Morgan Hill up into the foothills, then down beautiful Burchell Rd to pick up the Gilroy bike path, which we took to the Sports complex. Then we came back on the path to Santa Teresa Blvd, which we took back home. It was a nice day which started out on the cool side but got warm by the time we got back to our lunch stop. Heading South on Santa Teresa up the hill that takes you out of town. A side trip up the entry road to CordeValle golf course South On Turlock Ave The next few shots are on Burchell Road, one of my personal favorites: This is where Burchell tees into Hecker Pass highway, which needs to be crossed with care The Gravel Entrance to the Gilroy Bike path The next few shots are along the bike path, which runs for several miles: This is where the bike path ends at the Gilroy Sports Complex Returning on the bike path Merging onto Santa Teresa Blvd from the bike path There’s an urban section ...

Local Ramble

Image
https://ift.tt/EmJR6vI Yesterday I went cruising fairly close to home on my recumbent. It was a nice spring day around 60 F (16 C). I had gone for a hard ride on my upright with intervals thrown in the day before, so this was an easy recovery day. I enjoyed the nice relaxing pace. My hamstrings have been getting sore after hard days lately so it’s good to let my legs spin easy and loosen them up. Beautiful Early Spring Day For Group Ride.

Image
https://ift.tt/qa65dJO I got back from Phoenix to colder and grayer weather for a couple of days, then the sun came back. Yesterday my group had a really nice day for our monthly Taco Tuesday ride. We rode a bit south, then across San Martin, then north on quiet roads till we reached the Anderson visitor’s center. Next we went North on Coyote Creek Trail to Metcalf Park, fighting a pretty good headwind. But then the tailwind aided us in returning on the trail and Morgan Hill streets to our lunch stop. Lots of us were peeling off layers because it got over 70 F (21 C). On E. Middle Ave in San Martin towards the green hills Hill Ave in Morgan Hill Anderson visitor’s center The rest of the pictures are out on the trail:

First Hard Day After Vacation

Image
https://ift.tt/sS8e3Q6 Yesterday was my first hard day after getting back from Phoenix. I was glad I hadn’t lost any fitness. The rule of thumb is you can maintain your fitness pretty well on one hard day per week, and I was only gone five days. We walked a lot while I was there, I just didn’t do any strength training. I picked that up right where I had left off using the resistance bands in my garage yesterday and it felt fine. And I did a long ride on my upright, with lots of standing and 10×1 min intervals, all of which went well. Heading East On Dianne Ave. I hadn’t noticed my GoPro lens has this fish-eye effect. Heading Down Malaguerra Towards Back Entrance to Coyote Creek Trail to Get to the Off-road trails The next few shots on fun in the dirt as Coyote Creek Park: eading Home on Peet Rd past Andy’s Orchard, the trees are just getting their white blossoms.
