AI As a Learning Coach

Image
https://ift.tt/YBHIhEd I created this with “create image” in Gemini. The prompt was “I ‘m writing a post on using AI As a Learning Coach. Please make me an image to go with it” It’s recommended that us aging adults keep our brains active, so people read and play games like Sudoku. That is a step in the right direction. But I’ve been using AI as a learning coach on various topics and it it not just keeping my brain active. It is making it drink from a fire hose! I use Gemini for my AI stuff and it is amazing. I chose it because I bought a Chromebook a bit over a year ago, and it came with a free year of all of Google’s advanced AI (this marketing ploy was successful because I got hooked and recently paid for another year). I have friends who enjoy using other AIs like CoPilot, ChatGpt, Grok, and Claude and they love them so I won’t claim that what I show for Gemini could not also be done with the others. But my advice is to pick one, and stick to it. For my first couple of years of...

Nice Riding For Winter

Image
https://ift.tt/FpExbmB We had pretty good luck with the weather this last week so I was able to ride every day. I also threw in some walks close to home. I’ll be visiting my brother in Phoenix next month and we do a lot of walking there so I’m building up to it. I’ve found after a hard day of riding, my hamstrings complain if I walk the next morning, so I’ve taken to going to a warm up ride first before the walk. From last Sunday’s ride, this is some of the scenery not visible near the paved Coyote Creek Trail that you can get to off-road: On Tuesday my group ride to the Southwest down to Gilroy, and the following are from that ride. Heading South on Turlock Ave Up Day Road South On Watsonville Road Burchell Road in Gilroy, one of my favorites We’ve just crossed Hecker Pass Highway, this is the rustic entrance to the Gilroy bike paths. Not great for skinny tires so some people get off and walk Some of the nice scenery on the bike path with the Uvas Creek preserve a...

Coyote Creek Ramble

Image
https://ift.tt/QdU6HzV I did a fun easy but longer ride a few days ago on the Coyote Creek trail on my recumbent. I headed North to Bernal road then looped back on the “Tree of Life” trail that runs next to Basking ridge road, eventually running into a little off-road path called “Road N” that runs into Metcalf road. From Metcalf I rejoined the Coyote Creek trail and headed home. Then Sunday was my hard day for both cycling and upper body training. With my new exercise plan that I recently optimized for health, including that of my leaky heart valve, this is now a shorter day with the biking on my upright. I headed over to Coyote Creek to use the unpaved trails that are mostly used for walking and horseback riding, which I really like on my upright. This made for an enjoyable ride, challenging but fun. I followed it up at home with upper body strength training with resistance bands in my garage. I’m not sure what the old shed is for, this area was previously an orchard The Santa...

Group Ride in Nice Warm Weather

Image
https://ift.tt/JUAXvRN We’ve been having a sunny and dry streak for multiple days since the last bout of rainstorms over a week ago. But it’s been cold , at least by our standards, with lows in the low 30s F (about 0 C) and frost when we get up in the mornings. But yesterday was quite a bit warmer and it should stay that way for a few days. A great day for my group ride, which went to the Southeast of Morgan Hill to the foothills East of Gilroy. Heading East on Middle Ave towards the foothills Southeast On Colombet, into the sun Fixing a Rear Derailleur malfunction on Buena Vista South on Dryden Sugar Babe Ave, entering the upscale semi-rural suburbs of Gilroy

Tweaking My Exercise Program With AI

Image
https://ift.tt/S0mByGl I’ve had some fun recently working with Gemini Deep Research to tweak my exercise program for optimum health. First I asked about what’s the best prescription for a 72 year old (it will be 73 tomorrow) with moderate aortic paravalvular leakage, who is also on metoprolol (a beta-blocker that tends to restrain heart rate response to exercise). I got a pretty conservative recommendations. This is because in the absence of more data, maximum heart rate is estimated from age-based formulae which tend to underestimate my true max, and conservative assumptions are made about how much metoprolol will influence the max. So next I added the tidbit that my max heart rate has been measured to be 160 while on metoprolol. That changed things, and led to this interesting report . The report made this comment about the 160 beats per minute: “A critical data point in this case is the patient’s measured maximum heart rate of 160 bpm. In the context of a 72-year-old male on metopr...

Great Group Ride in The Sunshine

Image
https://ift.tt/7c3h9wy We’ve had a lot of rain lately. The latest series of storm delivered almost 5″ (12.5 cm) of rain. I’ve managed to sneak some rides in between raindrops, or in the rain with my rain gear. But it was getting old. It was nice when the sun returned yesterday. My group took advantage and rode to the Southeast of Morgan Hill, then headed North on rural roads to pick up the Coyote Creek trail. We took that North to Metcalf Park in San Jose, returning to town for “Taco Tuesday” at Rosie’s. On the way there and back we had to detour up and over Malech Road because the trail is flooded near Bailey Ave. This was a delightful ride of about 20 miles in stunningly beautiful weather. We had a small group of eight, and a good time was had by all. Heading East On Maple Ave The following are on the Coyote Creek Trail Heading North Towards Bailey: This is at the top of the hill on Malech road looking North, about to start a fun and fast descent: From here we got back on ...

Last Rides of The Old Year and First of The New

Image
https://ift.tt/gUiaBlO Last Tuesday, the 30th of December, was our last group ride of the year. I pinch-hitted as leader and took the group SouthWest of Morgan Hill to the end of Redwood Retreat road and back. It was a nice ride, the rains from the week before had ended, but it got a bit grey because another series of storms was on its way. Coming back down Redwood Retreat road Heading Towards Morgan Hiil on Watsonville Road Wednesday I snuck in a ride while we still had scattered showers. I cut my ride short when the main storm hit, and finished up on my indoor bike. Thursday was my first ride of the New Year. It was grey but not raining yet (that happened later in the day) so I was able to get a decent ride in locally. Yesterday we unexpectedly got some sunshine in between storms so I got in a nice two hour ride, starting off the New Year well. I took some video footage during this ride, and all the pictures below are stills from the videos, which are decent quality. Headin...
